DOE allows 4 power firms to conduct GIS

THE Department of Energy (DOE) has cleared the proposed power projects of four companies for the conduct of a grid-impact study (GIS).

A clearance for the conduct of a GIS is necessary for a power company before it can proceed with the construction of its power generation project.

Latest data from the agency’s web site showed that the proposed projects could generate 1,046.7 megawatts (MW) of power capacity.

In particular, SMC Global Power is putting up a 600-MW coal plant in Pagbilao, Quezon, and another 328-MW coal power- facility in Davao del Sur. The power company’s application for the conduct of a GIS was cleared on June 8.

Bronzeoak Philippines Inc.’s 100-MW wind-power project in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, also secured the green light of the agency for the conduct of the said study on June 6.

For the two solar projects, the DOE cleared Sun Premier Bogo Philippine Corp.’s 16.7-MW project in Bogo, Cebu, on June 30 and the 2-MW power project of Sunasia Energy Inc. in Sumilao, Bukidnon, on June 7.

The DOE approved in May similar applications for five power projects that could generate 258.9 MW of power capacity.

The proposed power projects involved three solar, one biomass, one energy-storage facility and one diesel plant.

In 2015 over 13,000 MW of power capacity from various power projects were approved by the DOE for the conduct of the said study.
